Going to the doctor

There are things you can do to have better doctor's office visits:
Be prepared
  • Know what you want to talk about and questions you have.
  • Practice what you want to say to your doctor on your own or with a support person
  • Schedule a longer visit so you have more time to understand
  • Create a notebook of personal health records
At the visit
  • Make a plan for what you need to do after the doctor's visit
  • Ask for information to be given in a plain language handout
Know your rights
You will be asked to sign papers when you go to the doctor’s office. These tools can help you understand what you are signing.
